Documentation for Experience 7: Exploring my Family's and America's Past

This experience involved me visiting various historic sites that are related to my family’s history or the Revolutionary War. I went to historic sites in Boston, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., New York City, and New Paltz, NY. In Boston, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., and New York City, I visited their Revolutionary War sites and explored the city with friends. When I went to New Paltz, I visited their Historic Huguenot Street, which is where some of my ancestors settled when they came to America.

From this experience, I learned that the Pre-Revolutionary War colonies were very different from each other, and that it is a miracle that the states stayed together after the war was over. Also, I learned more about my family’s history and what their lives were like when they first settled in New Paltz.

This experience impacted me because it gave me a reason to see many east coast cities, and it helped me understand the historical context of this country and my lineage. Knowing what my family has gone through, I am more grateful to be living in America, and I feel more empowered to be an engaged citizen.
