Documentation for Experience 8: Nanoworld Research
This experience involved me doing research at the University of Cincinnati’s Nanoworld Labs. For the semester of fall 2018, I performed research on magnesium stents and different coatings that could make them more visible on x-rays. During this project, I also wrote journal reflections. Lastly, I created a professional portfolio to not only share this specific research experience, but to also show other engineering students the variety of co-op experiences they can have in college.
From this experience, I learned that I would like to go to graduate school, but after a couple year’s break. I found that I enjoy doing research in materials science/engineering, and that I can complete graduate-level research. Also, I learned how to source materials and parts. Most importantly, I re-discovered that I enjoy completing technical work and solving challenging problems, and how to help lead a team.
This experience impacted me because it helped me realize what I wanted to do with my future. It showed me different engineering opportunities outside of the “biomedical engineering” – centric work that I was used to from my classes. From being around graduate students and asking them questions, I learned what it was like to complete graduate-level research and coursework. Because I did this project, I feel more comfortable about my career after graduation.
