Documentation for my Continuation of Research Project
This experience was a continuation of the SURF program, in which I was doing undergraduate research in the Molecular Cardiovascular Biology lab at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. During this project, I spent all day Thursdays (9am-5:30pm) and Friday afternoons (1:30-4:30pm) in the lab. I helped a post-doctoral fellow, Dr. Just Boyer, continue to do his research on genes that caused muscular dystrophy in mice. Also, during this experience, I read papers about research that biomedical engineers were doing. From doing this continuation of research, I learned more about the different types of research there was and what type of job opportunities I had in the future as a biomedical engineering major. I chose to engage in this experience because I wanted to continue doing the research that I had done in the spring and summer, and I also wanted to learn more about the different opportunities that biomedical engineers get in the research field. This continuation of research connects with my prior experiences, especially with my Biomedical RaMP and SURF experiences, because they all deal with doing research in the Molkentin Lab. Continuing this research was meaningful to me because it helped me envision a possible career path for me. Doing this experience helped inform me of my future intentions because, through reading the papers about what biomedical engineers were doing in the research fields, I was better able to understand what exactly people in my major do once they graduate from college. The prior knowledge that was most helpful was all of the lab techniques that I knew before going into this experience. Lastly, the best transferable knowledge that was gained by doing this experience was the knowledge that, if I want to go into research, then I am in the best major for it, because biomedical engineers can do so much in the field of biomedical research.
