Documentation for the Biomedical Research and Mentoring Program
During the honor’s Biomedical Research and Mentoring Program, I did research with Dr. Justin Boyer in the Molkentin Lab at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. I helped him with multiple projects that all pertain to muscular dystrophy. Every week, I worked at the hospital from 1-5pm on Monday and 8-11 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Through this program, I learned about biomedical research, grew professionally, and gained better time management skills. I engaged in this experience because I wanted to explore a career path that I was interested in, and this experience exceeded my expectations, because I learned much more about biomedical research than I thought I would. This experience adds on to my past experience with Eastland-Fairfield’s Bioscience Technology Program, because many of the techniques that I learned in that class applied to what I was doing in the Molkentin Lab. This experience was meaningful to me because I learned that I enjoyed biomedical research, and I can see myself doing it in the future. This experience helped me define my future intentions, because it gave me good experience with a possible career path that I am still interested in pursuing. The prior knowledge that was most helpful was the knowledge that I gained in Bioscience Technologies, and the new, transferable knowledge that I have acquired is how to section muscles, how to split cells, and how to work with mice.
